Keeping Pace with "The End"
I'd definitely revise the first sentence . I'd write that we have come to the end of the book as the medium of knowledge in our culture. I concede this but with much dismay. I relish my luddite status and enjoy the smell, texture, and surprise of the material thing. Now that is not the point of the quote, but I believe in affirming the bibliophile in all of us. My real concern with the point of the quote are the implications around transfer--from book to hypertext. Not so much the fact of the transfer; I get it and acknowledge many benefits. It is the how that matters. Materials that are not well- housed, archived, and, ultimately, funded have the potential to remain lost or become lost. Much of the material I search falls into that category. So, I see an opportunity in this "end of the culture of the book," but worry that my efforts to transfer the book's materiality will not and has not kept pace with this end.
